Students, churchgoers and community members across a Republican county in Ohio are dreading — and fighting — the deportation of a beloved immigrant teacher. Marc Rocher, a native of Haiti, has lived in Ohio since 2023 after arriving through a humanitarian parole program. He now faces deportation by the Trump administration. On June 27, the Trump administration announced that it would terminate temporary protected status, or TPS, for Haitians effective Sept. 2, amid intensified deportation efforts. Days later, a federal court in New York blocked the order, allowing TPS for more than 500,000 Haitians to continue until its original expiration date, Feb. 3, 2026. Now, with just months left to that deadline, Rocher remains uncertain about his future as the conservative community in rural Ohio comes together to support efforts to keep him in the United States.
