All internal flights to visit the Emperor Penguins at Atka Bay are operated using either the BT-67 Basler or the Twin Otter —both built for the extreme conditions of the continent. The route to Atka Bay allows for a low flight over the ice shelf, allowing for views of the different textures and brilliant shades of blue. Before departure, boots are disinfected in accordance with IAATO regulations to ensure minimal impact on the penguin colony.
