Black people weren’t freed. We were delayed, resisted, and re-enslaved through new systems built to keep us bound. From chain gangs to sharecropping to mass incarceration, freedom came slow, and it came at a cost. And yet, we’ve always found ways to survive. To fight. To build. To sing. To remember. To thrive. Juneteenth is sacred because it was never about what this country gave us . It’s about what we took back. It’s about the truth our ancestors carried and the future we are still shaping. It’s about Black people in America. Foundational Black Americans whose labor, brilliance, and pain built this nation and whose love for ourselves and each other has kept us alive. This day is yours. And everyone is welcome to honor it but understand: this is not just a barbecue. This is not just a day off. This is about Black liberation. Black legacy.
