Such a nice little spot, sometimes. Just a patch of frozen dirt in the winter. It's fun seeing this area in old timey photos that occasionally show up on social media. Back in the 1970's (almost 50 years ago..) it was closed to vehicle traffic as a regular road. I think it used to have some permanent bike racks in the middle? It was named Stephen Avenue in 1884, before Alberta had even been designated a province in Canada, although the area was called the District of Alberta at the time, as part of the North-West Territories. Prior to the 1870's Alberta was referred to as Rupert's Land, which was part of a larger area that included Manitoba, most of Saskatchewan, some parts of Ontario, Quebec, and Nunavut, as well as parts of Montana, Minnesota and North Dakota. It was all controlled by the Hudson Bay Company for a long time. Rupert's Land was named that after Prince Rupert of Rhine, one of the HBC founding governors. He never actually even visited Rupert's Land :( Born in Prague...
