Hi. I’m Jamey and I take photos of race cars for a living. Yes. This is my only job. And I’ve done it for more than a decade. I was JUST like you. A fan with a camera. Now this is what I do. For a job.
1) Don’t rush the process. If you’re under 18, you won’t even get credentials anyway until you’re 18. But regardless, credentials are for working photographers that have a client in that series or race, that need them to be in harms way. Yes. This is dangerous. And yes. People get hurt doing this. Every year.
2) Enjoy being a fan. Once you’re working these events, it changes everything. In good ways and bad. So be a fan. Enjoy it.
3) If motorsport photography is *really* your goal, then go as a fan and bring your camera….to as many events as you can find. I’m not talking about F1. Go to any event where there is racing or any kind. The access at bigger events (like f1) is TERRIBLE for the money you pay. Start smaller. Some events are basically free.
