Today, Malaysia’s Court of Appeal struck down an anti-speech portion of the Communications and Multimedia Act that has been repeatedly used to silence journalists and critical voices.
The Court found that using vague laws to “silence speech” was like using “a sledgehammer to kill a fly,” following an amicus brief from
#TrialWatch and insta_suaram, with counsel lim_weijiet.
Today’s decision is a win for free expression – and an example we hope other courts will follow. But more action is still needed around the globe to ensure these kinds of pernicious laws are not turned against those who need their protections most.
