Alimas grew up in South Africa as a refugee from Burundi. They spoke three languages, thrived in school, and pushed to belong in every way they could. Still, the path to higher education felt out of reach.
But speaking up changed everything.
That act of courage led them to the Duolingo English Test and the refugees (UNHCR) University Access Program. Now, they're a student at ucberkeleyofficial and part of a growing movement to expand access to education for refugee youth around the world.
Read Alimas's feature on the DET blog to learn how they became the first refugee scholar in South Africa to use this pathway to study abroad—and how they're helping reimagine what’s possible for others.
