We’ll always be big fans of Girlfriends. Joan, Toni, Maya, Lynn (and even William) are iconic for a reason, they each brought qualities we could love, laugh with, and relate to in various stages of our lives.
But rewatching as adults also shows us something else: their friendship wasn’t always “ideal” and sometimes downright, well..bad. From crossed boundaries to selfishness, and competition, the show gave us a raw look at the very human traits that creep into long-term friendships…
This post is about asking real questions:
💭 Were these friendships toxic, or just reflective of what many of us actually experience?
💭 Should their dynamic be a roadmap for navigating friendship in your 30s and beyond or a cautionary tale?
One thing’s for sure: Girlfriends gave us layered, complicated depictions of Black womanhood and friendship that still spark conversation and are very relevant in today’s socioeconomic landscape. And that’s why it will always be legendary.
