The Hortman Heroes Fund will help place service dogs with veterans and first responders. Melissa Hortman and her husband Mark were killed in June in what prosecutors say was a targeted political murder. Their golden retriever Gilbert was shot in the attack and later euthanized. The Hortmans adopted Gilbert from Helping Paws, which saw more than $100,000 in donations in the weeks after the killings.
