Shels were involved in a topsy turvy affair against Linfield at Tolka Park, with the visitors having a man sent off after twenty minutes. In the 42nd minute Shels were awarded a penalty but Mipo Odubeko blazed over. Three minutes later though they were awarded another penalty which Harry Wood converted to put them 1-0 up.
They immediately doubled their lead after the break though Odubeko with the aid of a deflection only to see Linfield get back into it with a Kieran Offord goal seven minutes later.
The Blues were then awarded a penalty themselves only for Wessel Speel to deny Offord this time and then with twelve minutes left Evan Caffrey popped up to give the Irish champs a 3-1 advantage going into the second leg.
Meanwhile in the Azores, Shamrock Rovers came from behind to beat Santa Clara.
