This color was once with more than gold, and only the richest artists could afford it. Ultramarine blue, made from the rare stone lapis lazuli, mined unit in Afghanistan. Artists treasured it like magic. But it was so expensive they had to beg patrons to pay for it separately. Vermeer was obsessed with it, he used ultramarine in his shadows even when he could not afford bread. Today we take blue for granted. But once it was a prayer, a sacrifice, a secret.
