This Reptile of the Month is a ⭐! Make way for the Indian star tortoise. This species is the smallest of all land tortoises, but has a big place in our heart. The star tortoise that calls the Detroit Zoo home is a 30-year-old male who loves a good meal, keeps a close eye on our guests and enjoys interacting with his keepers! Indian star tortoises are known for their stunning shell patterns and long lifespans — they typically live 30–55 years. These tortoises are generally solitary and can be territorial, but they still have big personalities (as this guy proves daily). Sadly, the Indian star tortoise is one of the most illegally traded reptiles in the world. While habitat loss plays a role, the exotic pet trade is the biggest threat to their survival. 🐢 Help us spread awareness and appreciation for this incredible species on your next visit to the Holden Reptile Conservation Center. #ReptileOfTheMonth #IndianStarTortoise #ConservationMatters #DetroitZoo
