In 2002, Panini released their Futebol Portugal sticker set. Each pack cost just 30 cents, five stickers inside, the kind of thing kids grabbed at corner shops without thinking twice. Tucked inside those packs was #306, a teenage Cristiano Ronaldo in a green-and-white Sporting CP kit. At the time, he was 17 years old and had just broken into Sporting’s first team, making his debut that August and beginning to show flashes of the talent that would soon draw Manchester United scouts to Lisbon. These stickers weren’t made to be preserved, they were designed to be peeled and pressed into the pages of an album, which makes surviving examples in top condition incredibly rare. Fast forward two decades, Ronaldo is one of the greatest to ever play the game, and that same humble sticker has become a grail for collectors. Last week, a PSA 10 copy sold in the Fanatics Collect Weekly Auction for $52,800.
