This October, the Cesar Chavez Student Center will turn 50 years old — half a century of housing student life within its distinct concrete structure. In the 1960s, a very different, distinct, concrete building was close to being built. The architecture at San Francisco State University tells the story of how the school has changed, but it’s an incomplete narrative. Filed away in the J. Paul Leonard Library and architects' offices are the stories of buildings that never rose from the ground.
