Happy Black History month from the Nazareth Center for the Arts! Today we’re featuring a famous Black photographer you may not know, Gordon Parks (1912–2006). Gordon Parks was the first Black photographer at Life Magazine in 1948, was one of the first Black filmmakers in Hollywood, and photographed many of America’s most influential Black figures, from Langston Hughes to Muhammad Ali. His most famous photos are those documenting the Civil Rights Movement, segregation in the South, and everyday life in Harlem, NY. He taught himself film at an early age and worked his way from part-time fashion photography to being one of the most influential photographers on the 20th century. *Thank you to our first intern, Michelle O’Shea, for putting this all together.
