"The moment that stands out most in Episode 3 of 100 Foot Wave is the first light of the day, when the surfers and I finally see the legendary Cortes Bank. The first waves appear on the horizon and the sky burns deep red over a perfectly windless ocean. The tension and worry the surfers felt the night before fade away, replaced by breathtaking awe.
This moment will stay with me forever because it’s the beauty of documentary filmmaking: behind the camera, I find myself overwhelmed with emotions just like the surfers I’m following. Even if I concentrate as much as I can on technique and settings, I know I’m witnessing something truly unique.
I shot this sequence using my RED KOMODO-X paired with an 18–35mm Sigma Cine, mostly around 24 and 35mm. As the light intensified, I gradually closed down the stops, increasing my ND filtration to keep the aperture between T2 and T3. I wanted...
