Día de Los Muertos is celebrated throughout Latin America and everywhere with a Latino population. Melissa Gomez shares the story about her grandmother, an Inglewood resident, and explains what Día de Los Muertos means to her and her family.
“On Día de Los Muertos we believe that the spirit of our loved ones who have passed on, are able to return for one night. My family and I have been making an altar that is over seven feet tall for over 10 years at Hollywood Forever Cemetery. Our original altar started as a way to honor my grandmother Vicki Urenia, preparing a place for her to 'come home'. On her altar I always have a meal that she would have enjoyed, sweets and drinks, as well as a few of her personal items. It helps the heart heal and remember your loved ones in a special and meaningful way.” To see more of Melissa's Dia de Los Muertos photos, check out our Instagram story.
