Legendary Mercedes-Benz "Rennleiter" Alfred Neubauer passed away On This Day forty-five years ago. A driver-turned-racing manager revered by his team, Neubauer was both meticulous and innovative - a team principal, strategist and race engineer rolled into one. Inspired by pit signals used at the Indy 500, Neubauer used coloured flags to deliver race information and tactics quickly and simply to his drivers at the inaugural German Grand Prix in 1926 - Caracciola won, but without realising he was even in the lead! 😲 By the time of the Solituderennen two months later, Neubauer had responded by developing his signalling system to include pit boards and hand signals - including those that drivers could use to communicate with the pits! 👇👎✊ . . . .   #F1 #OnThisDay #AlfredNeubauer #Rennleiter #MercedesBenz #Mercedes #FormulaOne #Formula1 #GrandPrix #F1History #PhotographyHistory #MotorsportHistory #MotorsportPhotography #GettyImages #GettySport #LATImages #MichaelTee
