Busan’s long-awaited new landmark is finally taking shape.
Slated for completion in late 2026 and a grand opening in July 2027, the Busan Opera House is rising fast at the city’s North Port. Designed by Norwegian firm Snøhetta (snohetta), the building’s asymmetrical facade takes inspiration from a seashell holding a pearl, with an open front facing the ocean — a perfect fit for Korea’s maritime city.
Now 63% complete, the project spans 29,542㎡ with two underground floors and five above ground. Inside, it’ll house an 1,800-seat main theater, a 300-seat small theater, exhibition halls, and various amenities for opera, musicals, ballet, and more.
First breaking ground in 2018, construction hit delays over facade design disputes, leading to a redesign. Work resumed in May, and Busan is counting down to the day this striking silhouette becomes one of Korea’s most iconic sights.
