During the pandemic, a man named Peter Slattery gave himself a funny little challenge—collect a full deck of playing cards, but only by picking up ones he found on the street. For six months, he kept an eye out on his daily walks, scooping up everything from crumpled, rain-damaged cards to random strays from completely different decks. Most of the time it was just singles, but near the end he lucked out and stumbled across almost half a deck when he was only missing six cards. By the time he was done, Peter had around 80 cards, with plenty of repeats—he found the 2 of diamonds five separate times before finally finishing. The backs came in about 15 different styles, with a blue crosshatch showing up the most. Some finds were especially memorable: a seven of clubs from a Spanish deck, a jack of clubs from a tequila-branded one, and a battered Queen of Hearts that he even repaired.
