🗽 Today marks the 125th anniversary of the 19th Amendment taking effect, granting women the right to vote! 🗳️ The Fine Arts Building was home to suffrage groups like Illinois Equal Suffrage Association and the Chicago Women’s Club throughout the 1910s.
In July of 1910, Illinois Equal Suffrage Association commenced their Suffrage Auto Tour, helmed by Grace Wilbur Trout, a famous and relentless suffragist and eventual president of IESA. She and other members toured 16 cities over 4 days, speaking and sharing their message. Here, you can see their motorcade starting outside FAB! Trout is seen driving, and her fellow suffragists include Belle Squire, S. Grace Nichols, and Ella S. Stewart.
Their work helped achieve suffrage in Illinois in 1913 and the nation in 1919, though it would take until 1965 for women of color to be guaranteed the right to vote.
