BAT EATER AND OTHER NAMES FOR CORA ZENG takes place in NYC’s Chinatown!
The first time I visited NYC a since writing BAT EATER (I hadn’t been for 10+ years) it felt like walking around the set of a movie.
East Broadway station is where the story begins, so it was eerie to stand there and imagine the opening scene. I wanted to stay longer and film more clips but everyone cleared out of the station except for a man singing loudly to himself, so I felt like I had to go (classic NYC).
Many people who’ve read BAT EATER are shocked that I’ve never actually lived in NYC because of all the details that I got right. To that I say: I just have friends who are NYC experts, and I make excuses to go there every other month to fill my suitcase with bagels. I’m going back in less than two weeks to run a half marathon!
