🇯🇵x🇺🇸Chicago-Style Taiyaki (Italian Beef + Giardiniera) Taiyaki was born in Tokyo in 1909 when a dude turned sweet pancakes into lucky little fish cakes. Fast forward to 1930s Chicago, where Italian beef became a juicy, spicy sandwich legend. So naturally, Shota and I thought, why not mash them boys together? Sweet fish mold, savory beef filling, you get it. The recipe is below if you’re feeling spicy. Ingredients
1 cup all-purpose flour
1 tsp baking powder
1/4 tsp kosher salt
1/2 tsp sugar (optional)
1/4 tsp onion powder (optional)
1 egg
3/4 cup whole milk
1 Tbsp neutral oil (canola or grapeseed)
1/2 pound cooked Italian beef, finely chopped
1/4 cup au jus (juice from the beef or extra beef broth)
1/3 cup spicy giardiniera, chopped and drained
Black pepper to taste
