I want to share one of the easiest hacks to instantly sound more like a bebop jazz player: the chromatic enclosure.
The chromatic enclosure is one of the most powerful and simple tools in bebop vocabulary.
By surrounding a target note with chromatic approach tones, you create instant tension and release that sounds authentically jazz.
In this example, we’re working with a major 2-5-1 in E-flat:
F minor 7 → B-flat 7 → E-flat major 7.
Here’s what to do:
1. Target the 3rd of each chord.
2. Use a chromatic enclosure to approach that 3rd (for example, above-below-target or below-above-target).
3. Connect each chord this way through the progression.
This simple concept instantly outlines the harmony in a very bebop-oriented way. In the video, I add a bit of melodic phrasing and variation, but the core idea is always to enclose the 3rd of each chord.
