Let's focus on something that can feel tricky at first: improvising over dominant chords. But here’s the good news: you can create beautiful, Wes Montgomery-inspired phrases with a very simple approach. In this example, we’re working with a C9 chord (C dominant 9). The concept is to superimpose a II-V idea over the dominant chord: 1. Think of Gm7 (the ii chord) as if it’s leading into C7 (the V chord). 2. Start by outlining a G minor 7 arpeggio. 3. Then resolve into the 3rd and 5th of the C7 arpeggio. 4. Play the phrase with triplet phrasing, giving it that classic swing feel. Even though you’re playing over one dominant chord, this gives the line a strong sense of direction and bebop vocabulary.
