Truly I don’t know if 45 min was even enough to celebrate the women both in front of and behind the cameras ensuring we share stories about complex, complicated and relatable characters that reflect the reality of femininity. Hollywood used to be filled with women both above and below the line. In fact, from the transition to “talkies” up until 1934 with the enforcement of The Hays Code (censorship that perpetuated very restrictive perspectives of women amongst many other atrocities) there were MORE female director crating studio/larger distributed films than we have today...IN 2021?! The Hays Code had and continues to have effects on how women are seen on screen and to the false rhetoric that has kept subversive barriers to more elevated and diverse storytelling from our screens.
