Why is it that when poor conduct or blatant disrespect happens, some athletes (and people in many industries)are excused, while Black women are expected to “take the high road”? After falling to American Taylor Townsend at the U.S. Open, Jelena Ostapenko allegedly told her opponent she had “no class, no education,” and even suggested things would be different “outside the U.S.” For us this, this transcends standard trash talk, it’s a reminder of the way Black women in sports are too often disrespected, dismissed, and treated with hostility, even in moments when we shine.
