Thailand’s Constitutional Court has dismissed Paetongtarn Shinawatra as prime minister after just one year in office, citing a violation of ethics and plunging the country into fresh political uncertainty.
Paetongtarn, daughter of former premier and billionaire Thaksin Shinawatra, was accused of misconduct following a leaked June phone call with Cambodia’s former leader Hun Sen, made during a tense border standoff. In the call, she appeared to defer to Hun Sen, sparking protests and anger among opponents.
She later apologized, saying her intention had been to defuse tensions and save lives. Fighting broke out weeks later, though a ceasefire is now in place.
This marks the fifth time in 17 years that a Thai leader has been removed by the Constitutional Court, underscoring its pivotal role in the country’s long-running power struggle.
