Good news! In a rare victory for civil rights coming from the U.S. Supreme Court this term, the justices unanimously ruled to protect students’ right to sue for disability discrimination in schools. The ruling in A. J. T. v. Osseo Area Schools is a win for students with disabilities and their families, and a reminder that all students have a right to a high quality, accessible public education. Disability discrimination is often the result of indifference and carelessness, and the Supreme Court reaffirmed that discrimination, even if not intentional, is illegal in schools. We recently sat down with ACLU-WA Policy Advocacy Director Caedmon Magboo Cahill to discuss the impact of this ruling, and how we can protect the rights of students in Washington in light of the Trump administration’s attacks on education.
