Criminalizing homelessness doesn’t solve the crisis – it makes it worse.
Across Washington, new laws are making it a crime to be homeless. These laws follow a Supreme Court decision which upheld a camping ban in Oregon, a ruling that opened the door for cities, counties, and states to jail, ticket, or punish people for sleeping outside, even when there is no shelter available.
These laws waste taxpayer money, push people further into the margins, and make communities less safe.
We can choose a different path, one that invests in solutions instead of punishment.
That looks like:
🔹Housing we all can afford
🔹Services such as counseling and job training
🔹Providing basic incomes
Everyone deserves a safe place to call home. By meeting people’s needs, we build safer, healthier, more just communities.
