Marvel Super Hero Island is a themed land at Universal Orlando’s Islands of Adventure in Orlando, Florida, dedicated to some of Marvel Comics’ most popular superheroes. Opening in 1999—ten years before Disney acquired Marvel Entertainment in 2009—the island features bold, comic-inspired architecture with vivid colors, exaggerated angles, and larger-than-life cutouts of iconic characters. It is home to four attractions, including the fan-favorites The Incredible Hulk Coaster and The Amazing Adventures of Spider-Man.
Origins as “DC Superhero Land”
Originally, the land was envisioned as “DC Superhero Land,” capitalizing on the success of Tim Burton’s Batman (1989). In the early 1990s, MCA Inc. (then the owner of Universal Pictures and Universal Destinations & Experiences) entered negotiations with Warner Bros. for the theme park rights to DC Comics as part of its planned “second gate” project, Cartoon World (later renamed Islands of Adventure).
