August 28th marks the anniversary of the tragic death of Emmett Till, a young African American boy whose brutal murder in 1955 exposed the deep-seated racial hatred and systemic injustice that have marred America’s history. Despite overwhelming evidence of the crime, his killers were acquitted by an all-white jury, a stark example of the injustice Black communities faced in the legal system.
In remembering Emmett Till, we acknowledge the painful truth that progress has been slow, but we also recognize the power of collective action to drive lasting change. The more things seem to stay the same, the more determined we must be to push forward, forging a future where stories like his are relegated to history, and justice prevails over prejudice.
