Meet artist Sakuho Ito. Her practice begins with washi paper in every work, and most are finished with the traditional technique of rakusui. Guided by the Shinto concept of Ametsuchi (Heaven and Earth), she works along two paths: Ame — the expansive, light realm of air and color — and Tsuchi — the strong, grounding presence of earth. The works in this video belong to Ame, created with traditional Japanese mineral pigments. An essential counterpart is Sabi-Washi — washi infused with iron to embody slow rusting — used in some Tsuchi-leaning works; it isn’t used in this video but can be seen on her profile. Ito chooses abstraction to honor the Shinto view of nature as deity: a presence without form. sakuho_art_activities #artist #contemporaryart #painting #japaneseart #canvaspainting
