Clara Tauson Gets Booed After Arguing With Chair Umpire During Loss to Alexandra Eala
The opening week of the 2025 US Open delivered absolute fireworks. Rising star Alexandra Eala of the Philippines pulled off a sensational first-round victory over Denmark’s Clara Tauson in front of nearly 8,000 fans—most of them Filipinos.
The flashpoint came in the deciding third set, when Tauson argued that Eala’s racquet had crossed the net on a volley winner. Chair umpire Kader Nouni disagreed, awarding the point to Eala even after video review. Tauson’s protest drew boos from the overwhelmingly pro-Filipino crowd, who rallied behind Eala as she broke serve to force a dramatic tie-break.
In an electric finish, Eala edged out Tauson 13-11 in the breaker, collapsing to the court as the stadium erupted. With the win, she became the first-ever Filipino player to reach the second round of the US Open, cementing her place in history.
