The idea for therosesfilm, starring Olivia Colman and Benedict Cumberbatch, came together at the Venice Film Festival in 2018, when Cumberbatch met with screenwriter Tony McNamara, former Searchlight Pictures president David Greenbaum and Colman’s producing partner and husband Ed Sinclair.
“There’s a lot of Negroni drinking in the film because [we drank them] a lot on various occasions in Venice,” Cumberbatch says about the adaptation of the 1981 book and Danny DeVito’s 1989 film “The War of the Roses.”
Colman and Cumberbatch talked to The Times about the movie, their friendship and what they might collaborate on in the future.
Colman suggested a remake of another DeVito film, “Romancing the Stone.”
“This is the new Kathleen Turner/Michael Douglas pairing,” Cumberbatch said.
