German motorsport was left reeling On This Day 40 years ago. Less than a month after the death of Manfred Winklehock at the preceding WSC round, rising star Stefan Bellof crashed fatally at the 1985 1000kms of Spa. Tangling with Jacky Ickx at Eau Rouge in a battle for the lead, both Ickx's Porsche 962C and Bellof's Porsche 956B spun up into the barriers at Raidillon; Bellof impacted head on, penetrating the steel barrier and hitting concrete behind.
