Florida has deployed police officers to stand guard after statewide efforts to erase Pride crosswalks began this week. The site at the Pulse nightclub memorial in Orlando, in particular, has become a focal point—state crews painted over the crosswalk colours, only for residents to restore them with chalk. Law enforcement was then stationed there to prevent renewed repainting. Earlier this week, Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy sent letters to all 50 governors calling for the removal of Pride crosswalks.
