On this day (28 August) in 1603, painter Caravaggio was dragged into court by rival artist Giovanni Baglione and charged with libel after he spread satirical verses mocking Baglione’s art.
In the trial, Baglione named a “bardassa” (male pr0stitute) allegedly linked to Caravaggio. Caravaggio denied knowing him, and no formal charge was pursued.
It’s one of the rare documents hinting at his sexuality.
Historians have debated Carvaggio's sexuality for centuries. His paintings often feature young men, like in The Musicians or Amor Vincit Omnia. Some scholars read these works as evidence of same-s3x desire, others argue it reflects the models and artistic traditions of the time.
Caravaggio’s reputation was shaped as much by rumours, rivalries, and his dangerous personal life as by his genius.
The 1603 case shows how queer accusations could be weaponised and reminds us why many today see Caravaggio as part of queer history.
