“Why did you go vegan” is the question I get most frequently and I get it. Fewer than 1% of Americans identify as vegan so it’s a curious life choice. I think the assumption by many is that the decision is predicated on some sort of ego-driven self-righteousness when the truth is, many people go vegan for many different reasons. The irony, though, is that so many people, particularly Asian American men, think that somehow, my veganism makes me LESS close to my heritage, LESS close to my Korean-ness, LESS close to my family. Not surprisingly, these same men are the ones who are so offended that I married a white guy. It’s like they can’t WAIT to call me out for my sanctimony when they, themselves, brandish their own variety of misogyny while cutting down those that just want to do a little good while they’re on this planet.
