We set sail from Oahu to Kauai expecting a 25-hour downwind passage… but halfway across, the unexpected happened: a tsunami warning was issued for all of Hawaii following an 8.7 earthquake in Russia. With Kauai in sight, we suddenly had to turn back out to sea as the Coast Guard ordered all vessels offshore. What followed was a night of uncertainty, rough weather, sleepless hours, and waiting for the unknown. This was one of the most suspenseful and surreal passages I’ve ever done.
