Class is in session! 🍎 Throughout the 1920s, The Chicago Teachers Federation held mass meetings like this one at the Studebaker Theater. Formed in 1897, CTF was one of the country’s first teachers’ unions and the only one dedicated to women elementary teachers. CTF thrived under the stewardship of “lady labor slugger” Margaret Haley, a former elementary school teacher herself and the CTF’s business representative, as the union fought for increased salaries, women’s suffrage, and utilizing previously uncollected tax dollars for the school system. In the 1930s, the CTF merged with other unions into the Chicago Teachers Union, which is still active today. #chicagohistory #fineartsbuilding #studebakertheater #chicago
