Why was this Jewish high school teacher disciplined for hanging the text of a Rabbi, arranged in the design of a traditional Jewish amulet? Created by artist @lioraostroff for the magazine @jewishcurrentsmag, the print features text from anti-war Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel’s 1971 essay “Dissent” arranged in the design of a traditional Shiviti amulet, a scribal art form of Jewish mysticism that emerged in the 18th century. Without saying why, the principal for an Evanston high school told teacher Andrew Ginsberg that he had to take the poster down from his classroom, leading to two contentious school board meetings and thousands of letters being written in his defense. Here, Ostroff and Ginsberg explain a little more about the far-right and antisemitic influences (even within a city that votes Democrat and has a large Jewish population) that they see as behind the effort to hide the poster’s message.
