Penumbra Theatre wears many hats, serving not only as a stage for Black American artistry but also as a site for healing. Founded in 1976 by Lou Bellamy in Rondo, a historically Black neighborhood in St. Paul, Minnesota, it came to life during the Black Arts Movement and has been a home for Black voices in theater ever since. penumbratheatre has become a haven for recording, conserving, and celebrating the lived experience and creative excellence of Black American communities. Since its founding, Penumbra has endured financial and social pressures yet still continues to thrive, nurturing generations of artists — including the legendary playwright August Wilson — and providing a space where Black stories are told and honored by Black artists themselves.
