Architect Kyu Sung Woo’s new home isn’t the only structure he’s designed on the leafy Cambridge street. It’s not even the second. Along with designing the award-winning Harvard University faculty compound, the Seoul-born architect built a modernist home for his family in 1989 on the same block. Fifteen years later, Woo and his wife, concert pianist Jung-Ja Kim, acquired the lot next door which would turn into their new, smaller home. The 3,687-square-foot home now stands next to its older sibling—and they each have a distinct personality. While the design of the first house, which was inspired by Korean courtyard homes, was about retreating to defined interior spaces, the design of the new one is about forging connections within a flexible interior as well as with the landscape and the city beyond it. “In a sense, House I was introverted and House II is extroverted,” says Woo.
