Sometimes you have to go big to make tiny work. When spotlabdesign signed on to reimagine a 980-square-foot apartment in Brooklyn, they realized they needed a bit more space to fabricate the extensive custom millwork. So, they bought a commercial building to bump up operations. It’s impressive that so few square feet could cause such a large step for the team, but it’s Spot Lab’s ingenuity that the clients, Audrey and Eric, had appreciated when they first saw their work: “It felt like it was done by somebody that had a handle on fun detail, but it wasn’t overdone,” Audrey remembers about one of their other renovations. The couple, who have an eight-year-old son, August, purchased their unit knowing they would have to address the outdated finishes and appliances in the kitchen and bathroom. “I remember moving in and saying, ‘We just have to live with the kitchen for a year,’” says Audrey.
