Back in 2008, we got the chance to visit Bruce and Landis at their renovated A. Quincy Jones home in Los Angeles. In celebration of our 25th anniversary this year, we’re taking a look back at some of our favorite stories from the archive, like this one. – A. Quincy Jones designed some of the most dazzling midcentury houses in California. In the late 1940s, the architect set out to improve the quality of tract housing by helping to create a planned community called Crestwood Hills, which was intended to contain 500 houses: 160 were built, and only 33 survive. One of them hit the market in 2009, right when architect brucenorelius and his partner, Landis Green, a school administrator, were looking for a home. Despite the structure’s compact size and that it had become “a little tired,” Bruce said “it felt like home.” To make it their own, the architect explained, the couple “replaced some of the really sad plywood with new plywood, and a straight-grain vertical fir.” They redid the kitche...
