For architect Max Strang, the opportunity to restore the home of the modernist giant was the culmination of a lifelong calling. Max himself was raised in a Leedy-designed home, located in Winter Haven—colloquially known as “Leedy Land”—near the structure. The architect’s parents were close with the Leedy family, so he spent his childhood visiting the house that Leedy designed for himself and lived in for more than 60 years. And while Leedy’s design played a big role in Max’s childhood, it wasn’t until he left town to attend the University of Florida that he realized the profundity of the architect’s influence. “When you are surrounded by Leedy’s architecture in this small town, it was normal,” Max remembers. “When I went off to college I realized I really missed being surrounded by great architecture.” It was a revelation that led him to enroll in architecture school, and to eventually collaborate with Leedy professionally.
