To set the scene: it was a dark and stormy night when Guillermo Acuña first glimpsed a narrow strip of land while looking for a place to dock his sailboat in Chile’s Chiloé Archipelago. When he got a closer look the next morning, he was intrigued by the changing landscape. With the rising of the tide, the small peninsula known as Lebe becomes an island twice a day. And despite the region’s harsh weather, Guillermo had a vision of building a boathouse on the land, which he would go on to complete in 2013. Since then, the project has evolved even further to encompass several buildings, including a two-story cabin for Guillermo’s family and an 800-square-foot cabin built for Roberto Pons, who is a partner on the land. While the boathouse is no longer used for storing seacraft, it is where everyone gathers to cook, eat, and lounge.
