Watie White, our fourth feature for
#AmericanArtistAppreciationMonth, is an artist who bridges community engagement and personal transformation in his work. Watie’s installation at the Boys Town Education Center in Boys Town, Nebraska, serves as an example of how art can be both a personal journey and a collective experience.

Following extensive interviews with students, alumni, and staff, Watie led 580 community members in painting individual butterflies. He took these unique pieces and created a show-stopping moment for the center. These butterflies, along with hidden caterpillars and chrysalises, symbolize the transformative journey that everyone undertakes. Watie reflects, “I wanted to find an unexpected opportunity to recognize and honor the individuality of specific participants, and in doing so, they consistently seem to grow and transform over time.”
