On this day in 1992, the Mabo High Court Decision overturned the legal concepts of Terra Nullius, or ‘land belonging to no-one’. A turning point acknowledging the traditional rights of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and their connections to land, water and Country.
The ABS acknowledges Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander days of significance as part of our commitment to increasing awareness and understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples histories, cultures and achievements – in support of reconciliation.
